Smart Beginnings Historic Triangle

Smart Beginnings Historic Triangle (formerly called Kids First Coalition) is a partnership of public and private agencies and businesses serving Williamsburg, James City County, and York County to enhance the quality of services for children birth to age five. With over 85% of the brain developing before the age of five, all Virginians want our youngest children to have Smart Beginnings, so that they become engaged citizens who contribute to our economy, strengthen our communities, nurture healthy families and build our quality of life. Children that start kindergarten behind, often stay behind. Our vision is that all children in the Historic Triangle will arrive at kindergarten healthy and ready to succeed in school and in life.

What We Do

Smart Beginnings Historic Triangle strengthens early education and school readiness services for young children and their families by training and mentoring early childhood educators, providing parent support, and creating community awareness.

Program Goals

  • Enhance the quality, accessibility, and inclusiveness of early care and education services through training and technical assistance
  • Promote family involvement in early care and education
  • Promote emergent literacy skills and improve the transition process for preschool children to support later school success
  • Create broad community awareness of the need for, availability and benefit of early care and education in order to build a broad base of support for a comprehensive service system.
