About CMIS

CMIS_new2The Community & Medical Interpretation Services (CMIS) was created…

  • Under the auspices of Child Development Resources in support of compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • To assist agencies in the implementation of National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services.
  • In response to the influx of foreign-born persons and the increased need for interpreters by many local area agencies that provide services to individuals who have limited English speaking proficiency.
  • Because of inadequacies in language interpretation by non-trained interpreters occurring during an encounter between agency and a limited English speaking customer. Recent studies have found that an average of 31 errors occur during a single encounter when not using trained interpreters.
  • To diminish the potential for liability based on the outcome of delivered services thus creating the need to provide professionally trained interpreters to facilitate an agency’s service.
