More than 85 percent of the brain develops before the age of five, and children who start kindergarten behind their peers often stay behind. This is why a coalition of public and private agencies in the Williamsburg area started Smart Beginnings Historic Triangle, a program aimed at ensuring that all children in the Historic Triangle start kindergarten healthy and ready to succeed in school and in life. With a good start, these children can become engaged, productive citizens who will nurture healthy families and contribute to the community’s overall quality of life.
CDR is the fiscal agent for Smart Beginnings Historic Triangle, which serves Williamsburg, James City County, York County, and Poquoson and is sponsored by York and James City County Departments of Social Services with local Virginia Quality funds. The coalition’s current priorities include training and mentoring early care and education personnel.
Virginia Quality funds and services are also delivered through a collaboration with Smart Beginnings Virginia Peninsula. This collaboration focuses on providing resources, mentoring, and professional development to child care providers in addition to Virginia Quality ratings.
