Parents as TeachersA child’s early years are the most important for learning.
Parents as Teachers (PAT) helps families overcome obstacles that get in the way of early learning and helps parents develop the skills they need to be their child’s first and most important teacher.
PAT can assist with:
- Eating/nutrition
- Household routines
- Car seat safety
- Finding hazards
- Preparing for emergencies
- First aid
- Play and development
- Child behavior
- Language
- Thinking skills
- Movement
- Determining family needs
- Setting goals and steps
Who
PAT helps parents learn how to be their child’s best teacher and is able to serve families until their child turns six years of age.
What
PAT can give children and their families the information, support, and encouragement they need for the children to develop to their full potential during the critically important first years of life.
Where
Families typically take part in twice-monthly home visits and may attend parent groups and playgroups.
How
PAT helps parents to obtain health care for their children, understand childhood development and behavior, and use play activities to promote learning. Home visitors screen for child development, health, hearing, vision, and safety needs.
PAT also helps pregnant families learn about prenatal development, health and nutrition, and help with newborn infant care.
